📆From 9 to 11 June 2026, staff from the Ilbirs Foundation patricipated in a marmot census in the Enilchek Valley, with the aim of assessing their population size and the condition of their habitats; the census was carried out by rangers from the Khan-Tengiri State Nature Park🤝.
This research was carried out as part of the wildlife monitoring component of the ‘One Health in Central Asia’ project☝️.
Before work began, survey routes were mapped out, taking into account the terrain and areas where high levels of animal activity had previously been recorded. The survey was carried out using visual observations with binoculars, GPS, rangefinders and on foot to minimise disturbance to the animals.
During the survey, burrows, signs of activity, colony activity and the number of individuals encountered were recorded, and all data were recorded using #SMARTMobile📲 application. Despite challenging weather conditions🌧️ and the mountainous terrain🏔️, the work was completed in full, and the survey recorded a total of 119 marmots✅.
