The mysterious “triangle”: Expedition in search of snow leopards
As part of the project Cores Corridors and Cats Across Central Asia supported by the National Geographic Society and SEGRE Foundation with the participation of Conservation X Labs, the staff of the Ilbirs Foundation conducted an important expedition in Kyrgyzstan.
We set up camera traps to study snow leopards and conducted ungulate survey in and around the Felis hunting concession. These activities were part of the study of the possibility of creating an ecological corridor between the Naryn State Nature Reserve and the Khan Teniri State Nature Park.
The expedition covered the area, which previously remained a “white spot” on the map of snow leopard habitat, and here the presence of this rare animal was not confirmed.
The results of the research are impressive🔥. In all surveyed valleys we found “fresh” traces of the snow leopard, which confirms the continuity of its range. Siberian ibex were also counted, and #SMART patrolling of the areas was conducted to protect local ecosystems.
We look forward to seeing the first photos of snow leopards from the installed camera traps!
